We put our values in the wrong things. And it leads to very disillusioned lives

normalise saying “what the fuck is wrong with you” to mean people

stop making this post cute. it’s blunt and violent. it’s about humiliating needlessly cruel people not about bickering with loved ones.

A good rule of thumb whenever a non-fiction author has “Dr.” or “Phd” next to their name on the cover is to check if:

  1. Their doctorate is real and from an accredited institution
  2. Their doctorate is relevant to the subject matter of the book

Example 1:

The cover of "Are You Being Brainwashed? : Propaganda in Science TextBooks" - the cover depicts a crude cartoon of a student in a classroom setting being annoyed by an elderly teacher with a long nose. The teacher appears to be shoving a cleaning brush into the student's brain through his ear. The box of cleaning product next to the teacher reads "Darwin".ALT

Kent Hovind is not a doctor. He’s a creationist conman. His “doctorate” comes from the unaccredited Christian diploma mill “Patriot University”. The “propaganda in science textbooks” he’s talking about is the theory of evolution.

Example 2:

Cover of "F*ck Them Kids: Challenging the One-Sided Narrative of the Estrangement Epidemic and the Biased Therapy Trends That Fuel it" - The cover is just white text on a bright red background, at the bottom of the cover there's a stylized depiction of torn paper, as though somebody tore out a piece of the cover to reveal a black background with the name of the author "VIVIAN KING, PHD" writter in white blocky all-capital letters.ALT

Vivian King’s Phd is in engineering science. She has no formal education in psychology, psychiatry, sociology, or any other field relevant to the subject matter of the book.

An author doesn’t have to be an academic to have valuable insight and information to share. But if they are presenting themselves as an academic to seem more legit, but their credentials are fake or misleading, it’s a big red flag.
